How Nature Benefits Your Mind and Body

Posted on 26 Jun, 2019

We spend more and more time indoors glued to technology – phones, tablets, TVs. In fact, studies show media use among U.S. adults is more than 10 hours per day. It’s important to balance out all that screen time with some fun time outdoors, and at Centennial in Menifee that’s easy to do. Check out how nature positively influences your mind and body – from lowering your heart rate and anxiety levels to boosting your mood.

Your mind and body on nature.
Scientists and researchers have been studying how nature can improve our health, and study after study has shown that simply taking a walk in nature can help ease our stress levels and boost our mental health.

In a 2011 Japanese study on the influence of forest therapy on cardiovascular relaxation, participants who walked in a forest over a two-day field test showed a significant decrease in heart rate and anxiety levels, and an increase in positive moods, over those who walked the same amount of time in a town or city. Another study in Stanford, California, showed that walking in nature for 50 minutes, over walking in an urban environment, helped to improve short-term memory performance, as well as reduce anxiety and rumination in participants.

Not only does being in nature improve your health, it can also make you happier and more creative. Researcher David Strayer of the University of Utah says, “If you’ve been using your brain to multitask — as most of us do most of the day — and then you set that aside and go on a walk, without all of the gadgets, you’ve let the prefrontal cortex recover. And that’s when we see these bursts in creativity, problem-solving, and feelings of well-being.”

Healthy living at Centennial.
Building Centennial around a central park was very important to the team at Pardee Homes, so the community was designed to embrace nature and utilize outdoor spaces. Living within walking distance of a park makes it easy for residents and their kids to spend time outside together. That central hub is also the starting point of all the activities within the community, with its access to trails and parks. And, even when you’re home, you can enjoy more of nature with generous homesites and covered patios for a seamless indoor/outdoor lifestyle.

So, whatever it is that you enjoy doing – biking, hiking, yoga, horseback riding, playing sports – do it outside and reap the benefits.
